SC Senate Candidate Dr. Annie Andrews Speaks Out

Pediatrician and Democratic nominee addresses reshuffled race after Sen. Lindsey Graham's death

WASHINGTON — Dr. Annie Andrews, the Democratic nominee for United States Senate in South Carolina, sat down with NBC's Meet the Press this week as her campaign enters a dramatically altered landscape following the sudden death of her Republican opponent, Sen. Lindsey Graham.

Andrews handily won her Democratic primary in June and was expected to face off against Graham in the November 3 midterm election. His sudden death has scrambled the race as South Carolina Republicans seek to replace their nominee.

Andrews is a pediatrician and resident of Charleston. She supports expanding access to affordable healthcare, Medicaid and Medicare. She wants to raise wages for workers in South Carolina and cut tax breaks for billionaires. Andrews believes South Carolina's Heartbeat Law endangers women's lives and criminalizes doctors and would seek to restore Roe v. Wade. She also supports term limits and banning corporate PAC money for politicians.

Following a recent Republican Senate debate, Andrews fired back at her potential opponents, saying: "Tonight, South Carolinians heard a stage full of extreme, career politicians trip over themselves to prove who would go furthest in doubling down on reckless wars, higher prices, and a Washington agenda that is failing families across our state."

Andrews is a professor of pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and has conducted academic research on gun violence prevention, which she views as directly related to her job providing medical care to children.

If successful, Andrews would become the first Democratic doctor in the U.S. Senate. The general election is scheduled for November 3, 2026.
